Area info:
|
The pijp is a multicultural area where
a lot of different kind of people will feel at home.
Ladies of the night, writers, artists and squatters
. . . they have all found a home here. Every visitor
on the Pijp will receive a warm welcome in this area.
The Albert Cuijp market is the beating heart of the
working- class district De Pijp. The Albert Cuyp market
is the largest and busiest outdoor market in Europe.
The 270 stalls attract some 20,000 visitors per day.
In weekends this number can easily double. On this
market you can find different kinds of things, fresh
products and exotic refreshments. After walking on
this market, you can consume a nice coffee in one
of the old coffee houses. A visit to Amsterdam is
not complete without visiting the Albert Cuijp market.
For a great many years the world's most famous beer
was brewed in De Pijp! Nowadays, Heineken - of the
world famous green bottles - produced his beers in
breweries outside Amsterdam. The former brewery is
now an interesting museum. The enormous red-brick
Heineken building on Stadhouderskade hasn't been a
brewery for a number of years. Fortunately, if you
are a lover of beer, you can still visit the place.
The former brewery has been renovated completely and
now serves as a museum. It tells the history of the
successful Heineken Company and shows you the brewing
techniques. The museum has a great new attraction,
the 'Bottle Ride'. Seated on a moving platform you
trace the route which a bottle of beer follows in
the brewery, a great way to get to know how a bottle
of Heineken is produced. It goes without saying that
the tour ends with a few glasses of the world famous
golden brew. Cheers!
